What is Night Hag?
Night Hag is a book recommendation newsletter for lovers of the Gothic, the mysterious, the weird, and the surreal. It’s a little taste of the English class you feel nostalgic for every September. It’s the witch who sits on your chest and gives you nightmares. It’s Gothic mania.
I began Night Hag as a guide to reading during spooky season, but now the recommendations range from Agatha Christie to Melissa Broder. I’m an eclectic reader whose tastes veer toward the strange, but who also loves a good thriller.
If you’re looking for spooky reading recommendations, you might like my posts on haunted house novels, books about witches, or books that give you all the vibes.
If you want to learn more about the Gothic, check out my posts on the difference between Gothic and horror or why the Gothic is particularly good at depicting family trauma.
Who is Night Hag for?
Do you…
think your mother might be trapped in a subterranean passage?
wish candelabras would come back in style?
have an interest in homicidal monks?
like to cozy up with a good book on a cool autumn day?
If yes, this newsletter is for you!
Who am I?
I’m a writer, Gothic enthusiast, and former English professor living in Virginia with my husband and cat. I’ve taught numerous courses on the Gothic novel, including ones that focus specifically on Mary Shelley and Frankenstein. I’m too scared to watch most horror movies, and I’m a total sucker for any book set on the Cornish coast. Talking about books is my love language.
