Dante forgot to describe one of the circles of hell: the one designated for mean teachers who write shitty things on their students' papers. I'm so sorry. For what it's worth, I still have long episodes of feeling stupid, although I admit that they alternate with episodes of being sure that I'm right and no one else gets it! That's also very cool about the fiction class and I agree with how liberating it can be to try different modes. I'm always making arguments to open up what counts as "scholarship" (websites, podcasts, creative-critical writing) for a variety of reasons, but one of them is that strict protocols stifle a lot of people who have a lot to say. Academia's a mess, but the R1 schools with all their rules tend to be the most depressing.
